Alghero
is an ancient town surrounded by ancient walls. Its
name comes from the italian word alge (seaweed) or
oceanic poseidon which can be seen washed up all along
the coast especially after the winter/spring storms.
Alghero was founded in the 12th. Century by the Doria
family from Genoa. In the following century Alghero
was conquered by the Catalan/Aragon people who entered
the fortified town on 31 August 1353.
The following year it was repopulated by people from
the Catalan area of Spain and to this day, the “algherese”
(the people of Alghero) use a language and customs
that originate from Spain.
The monuments, Old Town, Towers, Walls (bastioni),
Cathedral of Saint Mary, Church of Saint Francis,
conserve a clear Gothic/Catalan style.
