BRIEF
HISTORY ABOUT THE ISLAND
From 1896 to 1998, it used to be a penal colony, and
for a short period in the 80’s it has also been
the seat of a top security prison, therefore the island
has been preserved optimally. From an environmental
point of view, it has been saved from constructional
speculation, from coast damage and from the impoverishment
of the flora and fauna including the maritime one,
as for over a hundred years it was strictly forbidden
to even approach the coasts without permission. The
27th of December 1997 the prison has been closed down
and the Asinara Island has been officially proclaimed
wildlife park. The last prisoner left the island the
28th of February 1998.
THE
DESTINATION
This is a very fascinating destination, which is about
6 hours cruise away from Alghero, sailing along the
coast characterized by the high schistose cliffs,
numerous ravines and cliff creeps.
Once you reach the Asinara gulf you head for Cala
Reale, where the company in charge of the park installed
a buoy camp, exclusively for sailing boats. The admittance
to the park is not allowed to powerboats. Once you
get off you’ll notice immediately to step into
a different dimension. The sailors are the only people
to stay on the island after the tourist excursions
and, and it’s possible to visit the island on
foot or by bicycle. A road, long 23 km, connects the
island from north to south, which passes next to buildings
and prisons to arrive finally to Cala Oliva, a small
and suggestive little village, inhabited by penitentiary
officers and their families carrying out their daily
duties.
